Blog #6 - Due 11/10 by 7:50 am

Choose one of the topics to write on. Blog #6 is due Thursday, 11/10 by 7:50 am

Classification

1.    Study the table of contents of a magazine that interest you. Into what sections is the magazine divided? What distinguishing features does each section have? Now study the various advertisements in the same magazine. What different categories would you use to classify these ads? List the ads in each category.

2.    We all have distinct and “uniquely logical” methods of classifying elements in our own lives. Choose one classification system that you personally use. Explain your uses for such a system and your rationale for classifying it as you do.

3.    Make a chart classifying the different English instructors at your school. Explain the characteristics of each category.

4.    Do you think public schools should teach students ethics and personal values? If so, which values should schools teach in order to produce “good citizens”? Classify these values, and explain how these categories would fit into your high school curriculum.

5.    What problems are most destructive to a healthy relationship? Choose a specific type of relationship (friend, spouse, parent-child), and write an essay discussing various categories of problems that can cause the most trouble in this type of relationship. Explain why the qualities you identify would be destructive in the kind of relationship you describe.

6.    How do a person’s cultural views and beliefs affect the educational process? In what ways does our current system of education acknowledge, hinder, or ignore our diverse cultural backgrounds? Discuss how our educational system successfully or unsuccessfully deals with our various cultural differences. Are the categories in your writing distinct from one another? What rhetorical strategies support your writing?

Blog #5 - Due Monday, 10/31 by 7:50 AM

Consider the idea in The Chem 20 Factor that college courses can act as a screening process for students planning on pursuing a particular profession.  What inherit screening processes (causes) do high schools have that lead students success or failure in college admissions (effect)? Consider the different types of classes “smart” kids are expected to enroll in, and the intended or unintended effects on students.  1,000 Word Minimum.

Blog #4 (Remember #3 was turned in as a hard copy, not a post) DUE Friday, 10/7 by 7:50 AM

In a response of not less than 1,000 words, compare and contrast two figures from popular cinema (2 movie characters, 2 actors, 2 directors, etc) or from popular music (2 artists), to help your audience come to a better understanding of one (purpose is to use one of the figures to argue a point about the other).  Make sure you cite similarities and differences.

AP Blog #1 - Due Friday, 9/2/11 by 7:50 AM

In 500 words or more, discuss what you believe it means to be a “reader” – where does most of your reading experience lie (fiction, non fiction, trashy magazines?). Why is being a reader important? If you could improve one thing about yourself as a reader what would it be?

Compose this in a formal tone, providing relevant examples from your past readings, experience of personal observations.

Welcome!

I hope you as excited for the upcoming school year, and ready to embrace the challenge that AP Language and Composition will present.

Please email me your blog URL (internet address) by Monday August 22.  You will begin creating your own BLOGs immediately.

When composing a BLOG, please remember the following things:

  1. BLOGs are public domain.  This means that anybody in the world will have access to the information you post here.  Please choose your words carefully - your writing is how you are presenting yourself to the world.
  2. Keep pictures of yourself school appropriate. This is not your Facebook page, and we do not want to see your weekend activities.
  3. When writing, always compose your words in a formal style.  You never know who will be reading your posts.
  4. Length of blogs?  These are not quick writes, nor should you consider them novels.  However, when composing responses to the questions, please add depth to your responses.  They should address the questions, certainly, however you may feel free to elaborate and create connections to other ideas, readings or observations.
Feel free to email me with any questions.  Welcome to the digital world of writing!
