Classification
1. Study the table of contents of a magazine that interest you. Into what sections is the magazine divided? What distinguishing features does each section have? Now study the various advertisements in the same magazine. What different categories would you use to classify these ads? List the ads in each category.
2. We all have distinct and “uniquely logical” methods of classifying elements in our own lives. Choose one classification system that you personally use. Explain your uses for such a system and your rationale for classifying it as you do.
3. Make a chart classifying the different English instructors at your school. Explain the characteristics of each category.
4. Do you think public schools should teach students ethics and personal values? If so, which values should schools teach in order to produce “good citizens”? Classify these values, and explain how these categories would fit into your high school curriculum.
5. What problems are most destructive to a healthy relationship? Choose a specific type of relationship (friend, spouse, parent-child), and write an essay discussing various categories of problems that can cause the most trouble in this type of relationship. Explain why the qualities you identify would be destructive in the kind of relationship you describe.
6. How do a person’s cultural views and beliefs affect the educational process? In what ways does our current system of education acknowledge, hinder, or ignore our diverse cultural backgrounds? Discuss how our educational system successfully or unsuccessfully deals with our various cultural differences. Are the categories in your writing distinct from one another? What rhetorical strategies support your writing?
